Conclusion: That was really bad. Like funny ha-ha bad, but also just bad-bad. Despite the pretence of talking about Weighty, Important Subjects, there was really none of that, because you need the other party to at least have the same reference points, and Peterson is just not that well educated. Also because Zizek's a dick and has gone red-brown, making him a shit spokesman for contemporary Marxism. It was like a 4chan cartoon come to life.

I guess the best thing that came out of it was that some of Peterson's fanboys, having seen their idol soundly humiliated, might now flock to Zizek, whose ideology, though demented, is substantially less harmful.

Save yourself some suffering and watch the toilet speech again:

APPLAUSE! The Muppets have arrived! Announcer announces that there is to be no recording or heckling.

Stephen Blackwood is the moderator, says some self-congratulatory shit, and then welcomes the Muppets.

Lobster in a suit, Oscar looking slovenly as always in a polo shirt and pants that don't reach his shoes.

Oh shut up Stephen, this is not "real thinking about hard questions" this is mud wrestling.

IDEOLOGY! *takes a shot*

Stephen just claimed that neither are primarily political thinkers. Broken clocks, etc.

"Surprising agreement on deep questions" yes they both have cryptofascist leanings.

"Let's hear it for psychoanalysis!" Audience cheers.

I am pretty sure no one has ever called Zizek "dazzling" in his life until now. Zizek facepalms, then yawns, then claps for himself.

Audience is overwhelmingly Peterson fanboys, judging by the cheers.

OH GOD PETERSON IS GOING TO TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY. He's doing a Thinker pose.

There is far too much San Pellegrino and not enough coke on this table.

EACH OF THEM GETS TO MAKE A 30 MIN OPENING STATEMENT oh god. Then each has 10 min to reply. Then there's 45 minutes of fanboys asking questions. It's going to be a loooong night.

Found a totally legal stream. No sound so far. No one on stage either, but it looks legit. Apparently there is no sound on the paid one yet either.

The audience looks about half empty. I guess not that many people wanted to pay $500 for a ticket? There's, unfortunately, a live chat as well, and it is full of fascists, tankies, and people just typing "sniff" over and over again.

Now faded to a galaxy thing with an ominous silhouette.

SOUND!!!!!

Turns out the livestream of the Kermit vs. Oscar debate is $15, because there is nothing that Peterson will not shamelessly monetize. Obviously I am unwilling to pay this (I wouldn't be if the filthy lucre wasn't going to Peterson, but it is). Unless something changes in the next hour and a half, I hope you're all cool with me holding off on the lulzy commentary until tomorrow when the torrents go up and watching the season finale of Disco instead.

Alberta, WTF were you thinking? Did you look over at Ontario and see how screwed we were and go, "I gotta get me some of that?"

Also, someone needs to out Kenney. I don't know if it'll hurt his brand with the bigots and troglodytes but if anyone ever deserved to be outed, it's him. You come after the gay kids, you come after all of us, asshole.

George is home and just demolished a plate of tuna with meds mixed in, then ate a bunch of kibble before crawling under my bed. She's indignant and confused, but clearly happier at home.

Photo on Instagram (no injury visible, just her head in a cone).

Thank you for all your kind words and support.

Every day is a new horrific revelation in Ontario: <STRIKE>Yours To Discover</STRIKE> A Place To Grow. It ranges from the truly despicable—cutting all legal aid to refugees, cutting Indigenous Affairs in half, cutting health inspectors, paramedics, safe injection sites, and health care in general, and of course education—to downright stupid, such as changing the license plates to be Tory blue and less visible, changing the driver's licenses to be fugly, and changing the logo back to the old logo, so how did that cost $89,000?

Needless to say, none of it is saving the all-important Ontario taxpayer (of which I am one) a single cent. They're running up a deficit worse than the Liberals.

Now Drug Fraud is showing his vapid ignorance of collective bargaining rights.

Guess what? I don't want to strike either. I would actually like to go back to work in the fall, teach my kids, and earn a living. If he doesn't want a strike, I have some helpful advice for him:

Don't fire a quarter of the teachers in this province and make the working conditions hellish for the rest of us.

That's it. It's not rocket science. It'd also be great if he cracked a history book now and then and remembered that labour rights were the negotiated alternative to guillotines, but that may be too much to ask.

Surgery went well, George is being monitored overnight and they will call tomorrow to let me know when she can come home. Once she is recovered from surgery we may have to do more tests, but the focus for the next couple of weeks will be on healing.

I'm really trying not to cry. It seems so strange, crying over a building that I have never even seen in person, but it's something so important and beautiful and irreplaceable and just doesn't seem like something that could just cease to exist.

And it is just one of many important, beautiful, irreplaceable things that has been lost in my lifetime. It seems like a metaphor for how carelessly we walk over the world.

Despite the fact that I'm pretty much exhausted all the time, I managed to do stuff:

Thursday, I went with some friends to see Us. Which I loved. A lot more opaque than Get Out, Peele's first film, but that just means that I get to methodically go through all of the thinkpieces in an attempt to figure out the symbolism. Lupita Nyong'o' is so incredible. Go see it if you haven't and then come back here and talk to me about it. I probably need to watch it again b/c I'm not much of a horror movie person, so there were parts where I was just busy being scared and probably missed things.

Friday I got invited to a thing but ended up crashing out and watching telly. I have Opinions about the latest episodes of Disco and The Magicians.

Saturday, I went to see Orville Peck. On the subway on the way to meet my friend, there was a group of teenage girls sitting beside me. One of them asked if they were getting off at Christie Station, "as in the Christie Pits Riot" and another one said "I know all about that!" and they fistbumped. The kids are all right.

Orville Peck is amazing, though the sound at the show did him no favours, at least from where we were standing. (Ran into another friend after and she said that the vocals were more distinct from the opposite side.) Less of a problem for me because I've been listening to the album non-stop since it came out and thus know how the songs are supposed to sound, but my friend hadn't so that bothered her more. Great performance, though. If you haven't heard him, picture Chris Isaak and Roy Orbison giving each other handjobs in a truck stop, only in musical form, and sung by a sexy lamp.

Oh, you think I'm kidding about the lamp thing? I am not.

This is what I'm talking about:

This is my favourite song off the album, which sadly doesn't have a weird music video to go with it:

Truly we live in a blessed time for WTF music.

I don't even want to talk about the budget. Cuts to everything that matters, including education, health care, indigenous affairs, legal aid (with a bonus fuck you to refugees), and social assistance. A bone thrown to low-income seniors. Useless daycare vouchers. The promise of a transit system that will never get built.

Meanwhile, so much about booze. Now, I like booze as much as the next anxious depressive, but I feel like the existing regulations around beer in this province are pretty good? I like the LCBO and it brings in a lot of government revenue, so I can pay money for alcohol and it eventually winds up on my paycheque. But now there's all this shit about starting drinking at 9, drinking in parks, tailgate parties, beer and liquor in corner stores, like we're a low-budget version of Montreal without the vestiges of rent control. Combined with the mass unemployment (I don't exaggerate when I say that half the people I know who are employed are currently under threat of unemployment) I guess the assumption is we'll just drink ourselves to death.

But the best is that Ford plans to build a circus at Ontario Place. Or partner with a circus. Again, this isn't a terrible idea—I like the kind of circuses that don't have animals, and I think this is the kind that doesn't have animals—but if we are so cash strapped that the victims of criminal acts get their funding cut off, can we really afford that? Or maybe we're not that broke after all.

Meanwhile, Conservative MPP Lindsey Park attempted vehicular manslaughter today. I know that running over protesters is legal in parts of the US, but it is still very much illegal to attempt to run over someone with your car here. And I suspect if a person of colour did not get out of the vehicle when ordered to by a cop, they would be rewarded with a barrage of gunfire. Not so Minister Park, who did both of these things and was caught on video.

Just another day in this raging garbage fire of a province.

The Australian 2019 Election has finally been called, and it's on the 18th of May

Here's my personal list of priorities:
* End all off shore and on shore detention of refuges
* Serious commitment to renewable energy, ending coal mining and use, and other programs to prevent climate change.
* Taxes that benefit median and lower income earners, not corporations
* Fighting racism, no more fear mongering about ATSI people and immigrants, including no preference deals for One Nation or similar parties/independents
* [ETA]* Increases to Newstart and pensions, and no more #robodebt or other punitive measures against welfare recipients
* Kicking out the LNP as those fuckers have failed on all of the above points

The Australian election 2019 has (finally) been called: here's what you need to know

A few things, though.

In addition to legalizing tailgating, which I truly thought was already legal but I'm not that kind of white person so I've never done it, paying an unknown amount of money to spread untruths about the carbon tax, and getting his MPPs to tweet "RESPECT MAH AUTHORITY"*, Ford is quickly working on dismantling Ontario's healthcare system. He gave the province all of 48 hours to participate in "consultations"; he actually didn't want to do any consultations at all but someone leaked that this was going on. 1,594 Ontarians applied for a spot to speak to the bill in committee, but the government limited the number of presenters to 30.

I happen to know one of those 30 people and she sent me the video of her testimony. I think it's really important to watch. I think it's particularly important that it gets out to the media that the only patients consulted on drastic changes to health care, including cancer care, were given a total of 8 minutes to speak. The media, thus far, has not been interested in what patients have to say any more than the government is, but maybe you know someone who knows someone? She has given me permission to share this publicly. TW for discussion of cancer.

On a broader note, I have Many Thoughts about the death of liberal (small-l) democracy. And I'll get around to posting them as soon as things calm down a little. Now, I do not personally believe that electoral democracy structured along national lines with a market-based economy is the best or only possible configuration for a society—I'm basically a Marxist, after all—but I do think it's better than where we're headed. Furthermore, I believe that the market-based part of that equation ensures that the liberal and democratic side of it is, long-term, doomed.

I think that the final form of capitalism doesn't look like the United States or Canada in the 1950s and 1960s, which is kind of what capitalist's proponents want it to look like. I think it looks a lot more like Russia or China, formerly communist countries that are vastly better at capitalism than we are. And I don't believe that the step from here to there is all that big, or that the bulk of the population would put up any meaningful resistance whatsoever to the change.

This post is what I'm talking about. I think it's important to read because what this guy says, pseudonymously, is what I suspect is going through a lot of people's heads as the world goes to hell.

Democracy is pretty overrated. I would be totally content with a benevolent oligarchy making policy decisions for me. I’m not an expert in medicine, so I don’t decide who gets to be a doctor, and I’m not an expert in engine repair, so I don’t decide who gets to be a mechanic. Since I’m also not an expert in government, so why insist that I decide who governs me?

As Americans, we are so thoroughly conditioned to hold voting rights sacred and to insist that we have a say in our government. I think we’d all be a lot happier if we worried less about who was running for what office and let someone else make those decisions for us, but to a lot of people that sounds downright un-American.

Give it a read, and you'll have more of an idea of why I don't sleep anymore.

I've passed Deco a number of times and I really do like their red and black logo (not the tagline under it; that's awful). Note that this is actually the same Doug Ford and the same Deco (the business expanded into the US at one point).

Here is an article about Deco from 2014 and you should read it if you're interested in knowing how good a businessman this guy is.

The cuts to education will mean a loss of art and technology electives, such as Communications Technology and Visual Arts, which not only provide the foundation for a career in graphic design—in which you can get $89,000 of taxpayers' money despite a crushing deficit for a completely unnecessary logo redesign—but assist with concepts such as "measure twice, cut once" that are applicable to any discipline.
